Walgreen's Deals (06/27/2010- 07/03/2010)

Again, I must warn you of the trials and tribulations of shopping at Walgreens. Their "rules" are so irksome! I went shopping there again and was told I could not use a buy one, get one free coupon paired with a buy one, get one free sale. You get reimbursed by the manufacturer, people! Why is that so hard to understand! Plus, none of my items produced Register Rewards when I thought they would. But that was mostly my fault. I didn't notice that some of the sales don't start till Wednesday of this week. So, it's back to Walgreens tomorrow to return all of it. I just wasted my coupons though. That annoys me.

Here's this week's deals if you'd like to give it a go. I'm still only reviewing things that are free or really cheap. I've heard rumors that Safeway has retracted their policy on taking other companies catalinas but it has not come to pass for me yet. My local Safeway has still said it's fine. I even asked the manager! If I come to find that it's true eventually, I'll probably stop reviewing Walgreens. It's just not worth the hassle to me.

How to Eat Out Frugally

I've entered this grocery challenge that started last Sunday. In this challenge, I only have $100/week to feed our family of 4. Not that big of a deal for me who spends less than half of that on groceries but that total also included eating out, parties, and anything involving food throughout the week. Herein lies the challenge for us! How do we eat out on the cheap? Our family can easily spend $50 to eat out. So, here's some ideas I've learned recently on how to cut that restaurant tab.

1. Buy an Entertainment Book: When they first come out, these books cost $35. That sounds like a lot to me, even with all the coupons and discounts it comes with. But I learned that if you wait till like February or March, that price gets cut in half! I bought one the beginning of March and paid only $15, plus I just got next year's book for only $20! There are dozens and dozens of coupons and what's really great is the online coupons. Not only do they have more local coupons, but also coupons for all over the country! So if you're going on vacation, be sure to look and see what's available.

2. Restaurant.com: I love this website! It makes pricier dinners way more affordable. Our favorite sushi place is on here and we wait for the first of the month to grab $25 gift certificates for $3-$5 (depending on the sale going on). Check it out! Maybe your favorite restaurants are there too!

3. Restaurants Facebook Pages: Yesterday, I did not feel like cooking. It was hot and sticky and heating up the house to make dinner was not an option in my mind. But I didn't want to spend much money either. Then I remembered Del Taco sent me an email saying there was a coupon on their Facebook page. Bingo! Buy any item, get a Taco del Carbon for free! Not only was my mom and I able to get dinner for $2.15 total (Bought 2 nachos, got 2 tacos for free), but it was within my calorie target range. Problem solved. Be sure to look up some of your favorite restaurants on Facebook! There's always coupons out there.

4. Visit a restaurant's website: I think I've blogged about this one before. Almost every chain restaurant that I know about now has an e-club you can join to get free or really cheap food. I just joined Culver's last week and they sent me a Buy 1, Get 1 free dinner. My brother and I love Culver's! We'll definitely be visiting soon! IHOP sends out a completely free breakfast or dinner coupon if you join their club.

So, there's a few ideas. Can you think of any other ones?

My Shopping Week

Week one of All You's Grocery Challenge has begun! Here's the shopping for this week that I did. Meals this week will consist of:
1. Thai Beef Salad
2. Smothered Chicken and Broccoli (don't worry, this isn't smothered in cheese! Wouldn't that be great though... No, resist the temptation!)
3. Arroz Con Pollo

I got some very expensive things this week for a great price. For everything in the pic, I paid $37. That includes over 7 pounds of New York Strip steaks that we ate today for Father's Day. Here's a list of everything I got. You can still get in on most of these deals as well through Tuesday. If I were you, I'd go get some of those steaks at Safeway. At $4/lb, they are a fantastic deal!

Safeway:
7 pounds of New York Strip steaks
5 pounds of boneless chicken breasts
1 pound Jennie-O ground turkey
1 Key Lime Pie
2 bags of frozen vegetables
4 boxes of Duncan Hines cake mixes
2 boxes of Barilla pasta
1 Digornio deep dish pizza
1 package Sargento sliced cheese
4 cans of Chicken of the Sea Tuna
1 Ken's salad dressing
2 Safeway select salad dressings
1 pound Safeway rice

King Soopers: All I got at Kings this week was 6 packages of Angel Soft toilet paper, 2 Softsoap liquid soaps, and a few of the Kraft freebies that I got coupons in the mail for (100 calorie cheese packs, Kool-aid Lemonade, and Oscar Mayer Turkey Bacon). It came to $.15 in tax.

How to Stay Fit on a Budget

I've been blogging about food prices for a while and completely ignoring the "fit" side of my blog! So here's a few ideas on how to stay active and healthy on a budget.

1. Take up hiking: This one is very popular here in Colorado. We have literally thousands of miles of hiking trails throughout the state. A few of my favorites are Crags trail in Divide (click HERE for more information), Long's Peak (click HERE , and Maroon Bells in Snowmass (click HERE ).

2. Climb The Incline: A free, outdoor Stairmaster! Even the Army uses this as excerise for it's troops. You'll definitely feel the burn!

3. Shop for used exerice equipment: I've known friends who have found free or really cheap treadmills and stationary bikes. It's a great way to save money on a costly machine. Try Craiglist, FreeCycle, Play It Again Sports Stores, or local garage sales.

4. Join the YMCA: Our local Y's now offer a sliding scale for payment options. Depending on how much you make, monthly dues can be as low as $15. I know for me it was $16!

5. Check out exercise videos from the library. There are TONS of them at the Pikes Peak libraries. My favorites are the Biggest Loser ones.

6. Adopt a dog! This will really motivate you to exercise. That dog needs to be outside and you can join him too :)

7. Find a local running, jogging, bicycling, climbing, etc. group. Whatever type of excerise you like to do, I'm positive there are others who like it too. Colorado Springs has been one of the fittest cities in America for years. Get out there, make some new friends!

Huge Walgreens Moneymakers!

I hate Walgreens. There, I said it. It's just so frustrating for me to go to a store and not find any of the things I'm looking for or to not have a sale work out the way it was told to me. But with Safeway's new coupon policy (see the below post), I'm going to start shopping there more often. At least for the things that will make me money. So here are a few scenerios that will make you money. Actually, they'll make you "register rewards", which are Walgreens version of catalinas. But you can use those catalinas at Safeway! I've marked the ones I've personally tried so I know they work. The other ones are hit or miss. They should work, but I don't personally know for sure.

Walgreens (*= have tried)

Safeway's New Coupon Policies

I LOVE Safeway. Out of all the grocery stores in town, I get my best deals here. A prime example is today's wonderful trip (see above). I know not everyone is all that happy with them. A couple of stores in town have made up their own rules and it can be irritating. My closest Safeway, on Circle and Galley, is just great. The manager is awesome and really takes an interest in what I do with coupons. Hey, they get reimbursed for all coupons I bring in. It's not like they lose money or anything.

The corporate headquarters just released a new revised listing of their coupon policies (click HERE to review them all, if you so desire) but one new policy outshines every other one. It reads like this: "Safeway will accept valid Catalina manufacturer coupons that are issued to a customer by another retailer." This is HUGE! That means they will now be accepting Walgreen's Register Rewards. It's true! I used $4 of them this afternoon for what you see above. The above trip cost me nothing. Zip, Zero, Ziltch. Thank you, Safeway. You just made my day.

FREE Dinner!

I'm about to head out to Safeway to do another round of their marvelous Buy 8, Save $4 event but before I do that, I wanted to share about yet another free item. Sign up for IHOP's e-club and within 24 hours, they will email you a coupon for a free entree! Guess where my entire family is headed to tonight? Yep, breakfast for dinner! YEAH! Be sure to grab yours soon. They tend to disappear after awhile. Mimi's used to also send a free breakfast coupon when you signed up for their e-club but now it's buy one-get one free.

Head HERE to sign up for IHOP's e-club, "Pancake Revolution"

Grocery Target Prices

A friend had asked me recently what my target prices were for some of the groceries that I shopped for the most. I set out to think about that more closely today but realized, that was quite the question. It really depends on the time of year for certain foods (i.e. vegetables or meats), whether it's been on sale alot recently or I have not seen it drop in price in a long time. A lot can change for certain foods. But in general, here's about what I shoot for when it comes to shopping for certain foods. I didn't rate any vegetables because it's so drastically different throughout the year. Say, if corn is in season, you'll probably find it for about $.10/ear but in December, it may be $.75/ear. These prices are where I would give them an A rating. Take them as you will :)

Cereal: $.50/box
Fresh Chicken Breasts: $1.75/lb
Frozen Chicken Breasts: $1.50/lb
Whole Chickens: $.75/lb
Pork:
Spare Ribs: $.99/lb
Pork Loin: $1.75/lb
Pork Chops: $1/lb depending on cut
Bone-in Ham: $1.50/lb
Bacon: $.99/lb
Beef
Ground Beef: 80%- $1.25-$1.50/lb
90%- $1.75/lb
Sirloin Steaks: under $2.50/lb
Ribeyes or New York Strip: under $5/lb
Prime Rib: under $5/lb
Hot dogs: All beef- under $2, Franks- under $1
Soda: Less than $2 for a 12 pk; $.50-$.75 for 2 liters
Eggs: 12 ct- $.75, 18 ct- under $1
Butter: $1.50/lb
Milk: $1.75/gal

My shopping week!

I hope this helps you guys to see what it possible when it comes to shopping. Everything I got, you can get too at the same prices. Here's this week's. You have till next Tuesday to get these things if you want them!

Safeway: I spent $5.96 on this. I did this in two transactions. I needed to buy the Kraft dressings first, along with 4 other items (to get the buy 8, save $4 promotion) in order to get the $3 catalina. It cost me $4.32. I then rolled that catalina into the second purchase which ended up costing me only $1.64 for everthing else.

Albertsons: All this cost me $3.14. Again, I needed to do two transactions so I could use 2 of their frozen foods coupons.

King Soopers: Last but not least, I spent $4.08 here. And part of that was a mistake on my part. The brownie mixes ended up costing me $1 apiece when they should have been $.50 but I had an expired (by a day! Bummer!) coupon and didn't print a new one. Oh well, you live, you learn. I may return them. We'll see.

Albertsons Deals (06/02/2010-06/09/2010)

Albertson's has a few "make your own sale" coupons this week. There are stipulations. It looks like you can only get one thing per coupon, per transaction. So you couldn't use the $1 off any frozen item 5 times and get 5 items. But look through your coupons. Lots of things will be free or close to it when you pair these in-ad coupons with a coupon you possess. I'll get back to you on what I find. Just look for things right around $2. Those will most like be the free things.
